But studies have shownthat avoiding allergenic foods can actually increase the risk of children developing a certain allergy. According to Germanys Professional Association of Paediatricians (BVKJ), a recent Canadian study found that infants who didnt drink cows milk until they were a year old were almost four times more likely to have an allergic reaction to it than those who had been exposed to it earlier. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has recently updated itsguidelines on when to introduce children to allergenic foods. Previously, the AAP recommended that parents wait until their child was a toddler to introduce peanuts into a diet, for example. However, new guidelines recommend introducing foods containing nuts as earlyas four to six months old.
